The Challenge of Improving Social Mobility

Social mobility is integral to an organisation’s workforce strategy and its culture should encourage and promote a diverse workforce. Individuals from less privileged backgrounds in the UK, are less likely to obtain professional jobs due to barriers that act against them: less access to appropriate networks and support, poor career advice, lack of aspiration and underdeveloped skills.

HR leaders have an essential role to play in improving social mobility through encouraging business leaders in promoting diversity and eliminating biases. How can they improve their approaches to talent management and recruitment processes and what can they do to remove the barriers that hinder job progression of those less advantaged recruits who are employed?
