Matt Friedman, CEO of the Mekong Club and former UN and USAID negotiator, is an international expert in human trafficking. Both he and Chinali Patel, Consul International Illicit Finance at the British Consulate General in Hong Kong and Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee at the British Consulate General have had to negotiate with slave traders and brothel owners, as well as senior leaders in government, industry and charitable organisations.

Lucy Colback,
Editorial Director of the FT Women in Business Asia Forum Hong Kong

Lucy is the Financial Times’ former Asia Lex Editor, a role in which she used her 20 year experience as an Asia investment specialist to write commentary on financial market issues.

She is currently researching and writing a book on the experiences of World War Two survivors, while in her spare time editing corporate governance-related publications.

Lucy’s former roles include investment manager at Schroders and Asia equity research sales with Merrill Lynch. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

Chinali Patel,
Consul International Illicit Finance of British Consulate General in Hong Kong

Chinali commenced the role as Consul International Illicit Finance at the British Consulate General in Hong Kong in April 2019. The role has a specific focus on policy and strategy - enhancing diplomatic engagement, capability and capacity building in close coordination with UK, regional and international partners to tackle illicit finance.

Chinali also chairs the Diversity and Inclusion Committee at the British Consulate General. Chinali has thirteen years of UK Law Enforcement experience in tackling serious and organised crime including predicate offences (child sexual exploitation and abuse online, modern slavery and human trafficking). Chinali maintains excellent relationships with key influencers, wider civil society and international partners to ensure a coordinated and responsive approach to issues which need addressing at international level, ensuring that public protection messages are aligned across agencies and have maximum impact.

Matt Friedman,
CEO of Mekong Club

Matt is an international human trafficking expert with more than 30 years’ experience. He is CEO of The Mekong Club, an organization of Hong Kong’s leading businesses which have joined forces to help end all forms of modern slavery. Mr. Friedman previously worked for USAID and the United Nations in over 30 countries. Mr. Friedman offers technical advice to numerous governments, banks and corporations working to eliminate all forms of modern slavery and is the author of twelve books. In 2017, Matt won Asia’s prestigious “Communicator of the Year” Gold Award.
