EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DAME INGA BEALE, FORMER CEO OF LLOYD'S OF LONDON

After working in senior leadership roles in some of the world’s largest insurance companies, Dame Inga Beale took over the helm of the 330-year-old city financial institution Lloyd’s of London. During her 5 year tenure, Dame Inga modernised the organisation by embedding a culture of innovation and as the first female Chief Executive of Lloyd’s, she also played a critical role in advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives across the global insurance sector.

With over three decades of global business experience she was awarded her Damehood in 2017 for services to the UK economy. In conversation with Brooke Masters, Dame Inga discussed the joys and challenges of her career, how to be an inclusive leader and the value of resilience.

Brooke Masters has been the Financial Times’ opinion and analysis editor since 2018. She has previously served as companies editor, chief regulation correspondent, City correspondent and as a contributor to the Lex column. She spent the first part of her career in the US covering a variety of beats including criminal justice, local politics and education for the Washington Post.

From 2002 to 2006 Brooke reported on Wall Street and white-collar crime for the Post and followed New York attorney-general Eliot Spitzer’s various investigations, leading to her 2006 book, Spoiling for a Fight: The Rise of Eliot Spitzer.

Brooke graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in history. In 1995 she earned a masters of science in economic history with distinction from the London School of Economics.

Dame Inga Beale
Board Director, London First and Former CEO, Lloyd's of London

Dame Inga Beale is an experienced business leader having spent over 38 years in global financial services. Her final executive role was as chief executive of Lloyd’s of London from 2014 to 2018. She now has a portfolio of non-executive roles being on the boards of Clyde & Co, Crawford, London First and chair of Mediclinic.

During her five-year tenure at the 330-year-old financial institution of Lloyd’s, Inga was responsible for accelerating the modernisation of the insurance market, embedding an innovation culture and expanding the market’s global access across new, high-growth markets including China, Dubai and India. As the first female chief executive of Lloyd’s, she also played a critical role in advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives across the global insurance sector.

Before joining Lloyd’s, Inga was group CEO of Canopius, an insurance company with its principal operations at Lloyd's. Prior to that she was on the global management board of Zurich Insurance Group in Switzerland. Earlier roles include group CEO of Swiss reinsurer Converium and a variety of international leadership positions for GE Insurance Solutions, where she was based in the UK, USA, France and Germany. She started her career as a reinsurance underwriter with Prudential in London and qualified as an associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute in 1987. She is a chartered insurer and was awarded her damehood in 2017 for services to the UK economy.

Her philanthropic interests include being a member of the Pitt Rivers Museum advisory board at Oxford University, and patron of Insuring Women’s Futures, a not-for-profit aimed at improving women’s lifelong financial resilience.
