OVERCOMING IMPOSTER SYNDROME

You are a high-achiever, you work hard and perform well but you fear that one day people will discover that you wing it, that you are a fraud. Sound familiar? If so, you may suffer from imposter syndrome. Lisa Orbé-Austin, a psychologist and executive coach, says the phenomenon is widespread. Someone who suffers from the syndrome hears an internal voice that leads them to doubt their ability. In this session, Ms Orbé-Austin, whose practice is based in New York, presented the characteristics of the syndrome, its effects and how to deal with them. This report is a summary of the key take-outs from the event.

Sylvia Pfeifer is a leader writer at the Financial Times. She has covered industry and energy for the paper and was energy editor from 2010 to 2012. She joined the paper in 2008 as defence industry correspondent.

Prior to working at the FT Sylvia was deputy business editor of The Sunday Telegraph and City editor of The Business newspaper, formerly Sunday Business, where she was part of the launch team in 1998.

Dr Lisa Orbé-Austin is a licensed psychologist and executive coach, with a focus on career advancement and leadership development. She is a co-founder and partner of Dynamic Transitions Psychological Consulting, a career and executive coaching consultancy, where she works mostly with high potential managers and executives. She earned her doctorate in counseling psychology from Columbia University. Her views about career advancement, job transitions, leadership, and diversity and inclusion are regularly sought by the media and she has appeared in outlets such as The New York Times, NBC News, Forbes, The Huffington Post, Refinery29, Business Insider and Insight Into Diversity. She has also been honoured as a Top Voice on LinkedIn in the area of Job Search and Careers. Lisa has been an invited speaker at various national conferences. She recently gave a TEDx talk entitled "The Impostor Syndrome Paradox."

Her book, Own Your Greatness: Overcome Impostor Syndrome, Beat Self-Doubt, and Succeed in Life (Ulysses Press, 2020) co-authored with her partner, Dr Richard Orbé-Austin, was released in April 2020.
